OXFORD LANCERS 76-0 bath spa bulldogs
This past Sunday the Lancers began their 2017 season with a trip to Bath Spa, who were fresh off a large defeat at the hands of Southampton. For the Lancers this would be an important test to see where they stood within the division.
Having won the toss the Lancers elected to receive the ball, recovering an onside kick attempt to begin the game. 3 plays later, the Lancers faced a 4th and long, which was converted via a crafty scramble from quarterback Will Szymanski. This play seemed to give the offense some rhythm as they begun to move the ball at ease, resulting in a passing touchdown following a 9 play, 49 yard drive.
Bath Spa were then challenged to respond, however the Lancers’ defense stepped up to recover a fumble only 3 plays into the Bulldogs’ first possession. Starting another drive with good field position, the offense capitalised in the form of a Will Szymanski rushing touchdown. This was followed by another Bath Spa turnover on downs, and once again the Lancers started with good field position. 3 plays later and Szymanski ran the ball in for another TD.
This was the story for much of the afternoon, with the Lancers defense allowing -80 yards of offense on 34 plays, whilst forcing 8 turnovers. The offence capitalised on this with 350 yards of total offense and 9 offensive TDs. Defensive end Tom Rizvi added another touchdown on a pick-6 play, which put the exclamation point on a 76-0 win for the Lancers. Congratulations to rookie Lucas Stolle who was named MVP following a 4 touchdown performance.
The Lancers will look to build on a convincing opening performance, travelling to Southampton (2-0) this weekend.
