Old Boys Square Off Against New Lancers Squad
Last weekend the Lancers took part in their annual Old Boys game, inviting back past players to take on the current squad. With 3 weeks to go until the regular season, it was a great opportunity for the Lancers to get some game time in preparation for their first competitive game as a team.
The game started positively for the current squad with Rob Main forcing a fumble on Lancers legend Jonny ‘Priest’ Brooks on the first snap of the game. The Lancers therefore started their first drive on the opposition’s 16 yard line. However, after a nice run from Connor Thompson the Old Boys returned the favour a play later by forcing a fumble in the secondary.
The Old Boys returned to the field and Priest ripped off an 87 yard TD run 3 plays later. It didn’t look like he had lost much of a step in his 2 years away from the Lancers. The Lancers then looked to respond through the air but unfortunately QB Will Szymanski was picked off by the Old Boys defense after 2 plays, giving the Old Boys offense the ball at the Lancers 1 yard line. Josh Allen then punched it in to take the score to 14-0.
On the back foot, the Lancers once again looked to drive down the field. Whilst it started to look promising, the drive then stalled with a turnover on downs at their own 34 yard line. Priest and the Old Boys offense returned to the field and he gashed the defense yet again for another long TD run. Following a couple of stalled drives on both sides, the game calmed down a little and the Lancers eventually responded with a 41 yard TD pass to Lucas Stolle. The Lancers went into the half 21-7 down.
After a strip sack from the Old Boys on the Lancers first possession after the half, Josh Allen once again punched in another TD run, this time from 23 yards out, putting the game slightly out of reach for the Lancers. A few drives later, the Lancers once again responded via a Lucas Stolle TD, this time on a lovely 70 yard catch and run.
Entering the final 10 minutes the score was now 21-14. Unfortunately the Old Boys were finally able to get their passing game going with a switch at QB, with Joe Barker catching a TD pass from Johnnie Kerr. This sealed the game, with the Old Boys winning 28-14.
