OXFORD LANCERS 6-45 Southampton stags
Having enjoyed a decisive win over Bath Spa the previous week, the Lancers travelled to Southampton looking to bring the fight to the top team in the division.
After kicking off to Southampton, Oxford looked to set the tone early on, and managed to stop Southampton short of the line on 3rd down. However, an ill-timed offside penalty on the punt allowed Southampton a second chance to score, and they did so, running it in from 11 yards out.
Oxford’s offense started off slowly, with punts on the first two drives, while Southampton managed to break off a couple of long runs to put up points. Following a pause in the game while an injured Southampton player received treatment, Oxford put together a 9 play, 63-yard drive which began with two runs of more than 10 yards from Connor Thompson and was capped off with a 30-yard passing touchdown from Szymanski to Taylor Tummons. However, the attempted two-point conversion to Lucas Stolle fell incomplete.
On the first play of the following Southampton possession, Linebacker Yune Kwon forced a fumble which was recovered and returned for 10 yards by Matt Williamson. Unfortunately, the Lancers were unable to turn this opportunity into points, and Southampton managed to score another touchdown before the half.
The second half was similar to the first, with Southampton efficiently capitalising on a couple of mistakes by the Lancers, and the Oxford offense not quite managing to turn their yardage into points. The game concluded with a score of Southampton 45 – 6 Oxford.
